Kaleb McGary announces retirement from the NFL

The Atlanta Falcons were dealt a significant blow with the retirement of longtime right tackle Kaleb McGary, who steps away from football at age 31. A former first-round pick in 2019, McGary had been a staple on Atlanta’s offensive line for years, starting nearly every game during his tenure and providing physicality in the run game. However, a severe knee injury suffered late in training camp ahead of the 2025 season forced him to miss the entire year. His departure leaves a critical gap in protection for a Falcons offense that is still trying to stabilize its identity heading into 2026.

Atlanta wasted no time addressing the sudden need, quickly reportedly signing veteran tackle Jawaan Taylor to a one-year deal reportedly worth around $5 million with incentives. A former second-round pick and Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor brings extensive experience, having started over 100 games in his career. While he has proven durable and capable in pass protection, his career has also been marked by inconsistency in the run game and issues with penalties.

Looking ahead, Taylor is expected to compete for the starting right tackle job, though he may also serve as a bridge option if the Falcons target a younger player in the draft. The signing ensures Atlanta won’t enter the 2026 season, or the draft, desperate at one of the most important positions on the field.
