The G-Day game returned to Sanford Stadium this past Saturday, giving fans their first live look at the Georgia Bulldogs ahead of the 2026 season. With a strong crowd on hand, the annual spring scrimmage featured the traditional Red vs. Black format, with an emphasis on evaluation and development. Head coach Kirby Smart acknowledged after the game that while the roster is talented, there are still areas that need growth, particularly in terms of depth. “We’ve got good players, but we’re not as deep as we need to be yet,” Smart said. “That’s something we’ve got to continue to build through the summer and into fall camp.”

The quarterback spotlight remained on Gunner Stockton, who handled the majority of first-team reps and showed steady command of the offense. Stockton made several sharp throws and avoided major mistakes, helping guide multiple scoring drives. The run game also flashed its usual physicality, though the offense had its share of struggles, especially against a disruptive defense. Smart pointed to the challenging conditions as a factor, noting, “It was hot out there, and you could see it wear on some guys as the day went on. That’s part of it—you’ve got to be able to execute in that kind of heat.”

Defensively, Georgia made perhaps the biggest statement of the afternoon, forcing three turnovers and consistently applying pressure. The unit’s ability to create takeaways stood out, something Smart emphasized as a key point of pride. “I was really pleased with the way the defense attacked the ball,” he said. “Anytime you can create three turnovers in a setting like that, it says a lot about effort and awareness.” While the spring game is far from a finished product, the Bulldogs showed flashes of both promise and areas for improvement, leaving Smart with a clearer picture of what needs to be addressed before the 2026 opener.
