The road to Omaha will now run through Atlanta, as Georgia Tech baseball has earned the No. 2 overall national seed and the right to host an NCAA Regional at Russ Chandler Stadium following one of the greatest seasons in program history. After dominating the ACC throughout the regular season and capturing the conference tournament championship in Charlotte, the Yellow Jackets enter postseason play as one of the hottest teams in college baseball and a legitimate national title contender. Georgia Tech’s combination of elite offense, deep pitching, and postseason momentum has made the Jackets one of the most feared teams in the country heading into June.
Georgia Tech will officially host UIC Friday at noon, while The Citadel will face off against Oklahoma.
The Yellow Jackets cemented their place among the nation’s elite by sweeping both the ACC regular season and ACC Tournament championships, something only a handful of teams in conference history have accomplished. Georgia Tech rolled past North Carolina in the ACC title game, showcasing the explosive lineup that has overwhelmed opponents all season long. Head coach Danny Hall’s squad finished the year with one of the best records in the nation while leading college baseball in several offensive categories, including batting average and slugging percentage. The championship marked Georgia Tech’s 10th ACC Tournament title and further solidified the Jackets as one of the premier programs in the sport this season.
At the center of the historic season has been superstar outfielder Drew Burress, who continues to rewrite the Georgia Tech record books. During the ACC Tournament, Burress launched the 58th home run of his career, passing Yellow Jackets legend Jason Varitek to become the school’s all-time home run leader. The accomplishment adds another milestone to Burress’ remarkable career, which has already made him one of the most decorated players in program history. Burress has been the spark plug for Georgia Tech’s offense from the leadoff spot, combining elite power with consistency and clutch production throughout the year.
Now, postseason baseball returns to The Flats with enormous expectations surrounding the Yellow Jackets. Atlanta Regional games are expected to bring packed crowds and an electric atmosphere to Russ Chandler Stadium as Georgia Tech looks to take the next step toward the College World Series in Omaha. With the No. 2 national seed, the Jackets are positioned to host throughout the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament if they continue winning, giving Tech a major home-field advantage. After years of building toward a breakthrough, this Georgia Tech team has an opportunity to deliver one of the greatest postseason runs the program has ever seen.
